    Amazing. Amazing. Amazing.

That seems to be the only word that can best describe what occurred a little over a month ago on October 15, 2010. For twelve hours, students and members of the community far and wide gathered at Miami Dade College Kendall Campus to eat, dance, and celebrate a strong hope for the poor.

We could not have asked for more perfect weather. The night before there was talk about having to possibly move our entire event into the library concourse, but we were spared from rain. It did get very, very cold late in the evening, however, something us Miamians were not prepared for.

The Team and I had already practically done two all-nighters the two nights before the official All-Nighter doing last-minute preparations. We will never forget the immense support we received from so many volunteers and our closest friends and family. On behalf of the entire team, I would like to thank all of you (and you know who you are) who helped us during those final hours.

Plenty of volunteers showed up to Fred Shaw Memorial Plaza starting at 12:00 pm that day to help set up for the event. In a matter of hours, tents were propped up and decorating began. Posters were created and hung up all around campus and the plaza. Volunteers used chalk to draw colorful art onto the entrance to the event, and when the event started we even had a high school student graffiti “All-Nighter for Haiti.”

The energy that night was incredible. Our volunteers were all over the plaza asking for donations and selling t-shirts, raffle tickets, food, and baked goods to event attendees and even to each other. (I was approached countless times by volunteers asking me to buy and donate, which I found quite humorous, but it made me proud to see how committed and passionate they were to this cause).

If you weren’t dancing that night, you were eating, and chances are you did both. There was so much movement that night that it nearly warmed the place up. (I was still freezing that night, though!) Our entertainment included performances by Delpaxton, Jacob Jeffries Band, Marlon Alarm, our main performance by Jahfe, and many, many other dance and musical performances. Again, on behalf of the entire Team, I would like to thank all of our performances for their generous donation of their wonderful talents to help our cause. Without you all, our event would not have been as successful as it was.

Though the Team and I were running around the plaza like chickens without a head trying to make things run smoothly, I occasionally stopped to just look at the plaza. The feeling that came about was indescribable. It was surreal. To this day, it still has yet to hit me just exactly what we did. Wendy and others from Food for the Poor, Inc. could not stop expressing how amazed and happy they were by our event; it was surely a party you could not miss! Our friends from last year’s All-Nighter Team, Stephanie del Pino and Amanda Balarezo stopped by, and they could not hold back smiles and tears of joy. They were definitely impressed and overjoyed that their idea, their project, their baby had lived on after they graduated.

The crowd was strongest by midnight, and although it died down slightly, there was a large group that stayed until 7:00 am exactly. We ended the night with a drum circle, and one of our hosts, Steven, kept the energy alive ‘til the last second. The sun was starting to rise, and when the clock struck 7 there was a sigh of relief, applause, and still more excitement - We did it!

And how could I forget our hosts? Natalie and Steven were so energetic and definitely fueled the energy all night long. Again, it was DEFINITELY a party you shouldn’t have missed!

Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! We cannot begin to thank everyone and anyone who helped, whether in big ways or small ways.

Because of all your support and participation, we believe we were able to reach roughly $24,000, more than last year’s $23,000 achievement. (Once we get the final count, we’ll surely let you all know.)

Over $7,500 was raised in online donations, over $11,000 the night of the event, and much more through outside fundraising.

We hope and know that all this hard work and all the money we raised will be used to help a community in Haiti rebuild their lives. Soon, they will have more sources of food and business. Recent news about a cholera outbreak in the Artibonite region did upset us, but we are reassured by the fact that this money we raised will be used to bring them much assistance.

I’ve mentioned this countless times before that I have seen how inspired and passionate our volunteers were before the event at bake sales and other fundraising events, but I cannot even begin to describe how this inspiration has exploded after All-Nighter. Let me tell you, there is hope for our future.

Thank you all again! We hope to bring you more news and reactions to our event soon. This time of the year is nearing the end of the semester, so we thank you for your patience and understanding!

    Diego

Miami Dade College students preparing for annual ‘All-Nighter for Haiti’

In 2009, more than 300 Miami Dade College (MDC) students led a hugely successful fundraising effort to help fight hunger and poverty in Haiti.
This year, student leaders have planned an even larger campaign for the “All-Nighter for Haiti,” beginning at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 15, and continuing until 7 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, at the college’s Fred Shaw Memorial Plaza on the Kendall Campus, 11011 SW 104 St.

KENDALL, Fla. — Hundreds of students at the Kendall campus of Miami-Dade College stayed up all night for a festival and fundraiser to raise money for Haiti.
The “All-Nighter for Haiti” started at 7:00 p.m. Friday night and lasted until 7:00 a.m. Saturday morning.
Last year, students raised more than $23,000 to combat hunger and poverty in Haiti. Since January’s earthquake, organizers said they wanted to beat that figure.
In Haiti, commerce is coming back but rebuilding is still painfully slow.
Tensions among those still in refugee camps is high. Friday afternoon, protesters took to the streets to voice anger that U.N. efforts have been ineffective.
Organizers for the “All-Nighter” hope funds raised will make a direct impact. Tilapia ponds were created using last year’s money, according to Stuart Williams, a sociology professor.

    Last All-Nighter before All-Nighter!

What a sad thought! Tonight is the last all-nighter before the All-Nighter for Haiti!

I first became involved with the ANFH in mid-May, and it’s now five months later. We’ve raised over $6,000 in just online donations, over $1,000 in bake sales, and thousands more dollars in other fundraising projects. Our volunteers this year have been absolutely amazing; they have managed our bake sales all by themselves, approached businesses for donations, and much, much more. I and the entire ANFH 2010 Team are so very proud of all of our volunteers. We cannot wait until tomorrow night to see all our hard work culminate.

Tonight is the calm before the storm. It’s 1:30 am EST. Some of the Team and friends are gathered at Michelle’s house working on last minute preparations (and some last-minute homework). Most, if not all, of us are sleeping over, and one of the “friends” is already knocked out.

We stopped by ChicBerry tonight for the kickoff party for the amazing fundraising event taking place ‘til the Halloween. ChicBerry will donate 25% of all purchases where the customer presented our event flyer. See www.allnighter.org/chicberry for more information.

Well, I should get to my homework before the Team gets upset at me!

    See you all tomorrow!

    Jahfé is for the People

We are nearly 24 hours away from tomorrow’s life-changing event, and I am very excited to announce our headliner performance: Jahfé.

They will perform from 11:30 pm until 12:30 am. Come join us!

Jahfé, which means “creation,” is a band based out of Miami, FL. Their musical style fuses roots reggae with many other genres including rock, dub, soul and R&B, creating a unique blend of organic sounds. The members of Jahfé hail from nations all around the world including Haiti, Spain, Israel, Cuba, Czech Republic, Morocco and the United States. The first ever conscious reggae band to be fronted by a female, Jahfé hits Mach 2 within the opening measure of their music, with a powerful presence from Esther Fortune, lead vocalist for the 10-piece band.

“Jahfé is for the People” is the chant that can be heard at every show. The band represents the youth with a voice. It embodies the power of a young generation and the wisdom of roots culture. The music of Jahfé reflects the true ability of conscious music to connect people everywhere. Jahfé uses its music to speak out against the injustices plaguing the world. They have been featured in documentaries about domestic violence and have worked to increase awareness about the genocide in Darfur. Jahfé’s music is filled with references to many of the serious issues that take place around us every day: hunger, poverty, disease, rape and the hatred between nations. Jahfé is a movement that seeks to touch people all over the world with its message.

The band is comprised of some of the hardest working musicians in Miami. Collectively, Jahfé has worked with Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean, Thievery’s Corporations, Ky-Mani Marley, the BlackOut Movement, Paul Fakhourie (producer: Lauryn Hill, Stephen Marley, Damian Marley, Gwen Stephanie), Karl Pitterson, Inner Circle and The Grammy Foundation, among others. Jahfé has shared the stage with such notable artists such as Damian, Stephen, Julian and Ky-Mani Marley, Steel Pulse, Buju Banton, Capleton, Collie Buddz, Midnite, Toots and the Maytals, Pato Banton, Nas, Maxi Priest and Johnny Dread. Currently Jahfé is playing all over the Southeast US. Their highly anticipated new album, “The Solution” has just been released and is currently available online and at live shows.
